There were seven Chinese riders to enter the 2010 Dakar rally in total, 2 motorcycles and 5 cars. By stage ten, last checked upon, there was only one car that had caved in. Seemed as if it was working according to plan for the rest.
And the finish, how did they do?
First of all, the two motorcycle riders, the ones on the supposedly Chinese brand Jincheng (in the industry said to be Yamaha), did finish the Dakar rally. And put up a fight throughout the entire rally - as the stage placings further down will show. Late nights work has been performed by Su Wenmin and Wei Guanghui. Big congratulations to these two riders, a pride in Chinese community for sure!
There was only one car out by the 10th stage, no 437, a Toyota driven by Zhao Yongguo. And that was the only car with a Chinese driver to withdraw in the 2010 Dakar rally, the others pulled through and ended up: 28th, 29th, 33rd and 45th. Most certainly these riders will be celebrated once back home, very imortant to both Chery and Hover to reach the finishing line out of many perspectives. Well done!
Makes you wonder, how many Chinese car manufacturers will enter the 2011 Dakar rally?

I'm really glad this year Chinese competitors succeded on Dakar. I remember their first entry with their own (well...*) brand back in 2006. It was truly disater, both cars (JMC) didn't make it even to stage 3. Last year there were 2 Jincheng 250ccm motorbikes and they almost made it to the rest day. And now, ladies and gentlemen, we have just one out of seven that left out. I'm especially surprised by Chery Rely X5 cars - never heard of them except that terrible crash test results few years ago. I hope the number of chinese brands and competitors will rise.
ReplyDelete* Chinese are well known for their copying of proved things. JMC was copy of Isuzu and it is said that this years Jincheng 450 is not a copy - IT IS Yamaha 450 but with their sticker. Who knows... and who cares? :-)

ReplyDeleteDakar Rally sounds great to me! I'm excited that we will join the Amsterdam-Dakar with a very old Opel Astra, worth only $ 650,-! :D
