According to the official press statement of the ASO, received earlier today, the number of racers still in the game are:
125 motorcycles
21 quads
123 cars
71 trucks
The total number of withdrawals by the half way mark is 23,3% or 99 contestants. Stage 5 took the biggest blow when losing 35 racers, so far. Organizers say rough stretches are yet to come as the rally moves into Peru. Motorcycle category has lost 29,8% of its racers and chances are likely half of the entrants in the 2012 Dakar rally could potentially be out before the finishing line in Lima.
